IslandJobs.net is a job board created to meet the hiring needs of small businesses in the Caribbean and Central America. While there is some local competition in the region, the big names such as LinkedIn, Indeed, Monster, etc have struggled to enter the market due to their higher cost for job postings. Medium and small businesses needed a place to find new employees at a reasonable cost, and hence the driving factor behind IslandJobs.net.
The job board is based on a WordPress platform using a premium theme and various plugins to improve functionality. Extensive CSS and PHP modifications were made in order to get the custom functionality I was looking for. Most of the programming changes I did myself. Site loading time remains an issue which appears to be a limitation of the base theme used to build the site. I am currently redeveloping a new version of the site, including an app to help improve functionality for job seekers.
The site is currently averaging about 9,000 jobs, mostly scraped from other job boards such as Career Jet, with the intent of curtailing the scraped jobs as direct paying customers increase in volume. The site is averaging about 600 unique visitors per day, and the Facebook page already has several thousand likes and followers.
